World Oceans Day, June 8th 2011

On June 8th we are celebrating “World Oceans Day”. This is an annual event where people around the world ‘celebrate and honour the body of water which links us all, for what it provides humans and what it represents’.

This event aims to show the local public what an important place the Ocean is. Not only do we have California Sea lions and African Penguins here at the Park – who out in there in the wild depend upon the Ocean for survival, we have the Atlantic Ocean right on our doorstep here in North Devon – what better place to celebrate World Oceans Day!

So why should we respect the Ocean?

The world’s ocean:

• Generates most of the oxygen we breathe
• Helps feed us
• Regulates our climate
• Cleans the water we drink
• Offers us a pharmacopoeia of potential medicines
• Provides limitless inspiration!

Not only that… think of all the animal life living in the Ocean throughout the world! If it wasn’t for the Ocean…would sea lions and penguins exist?

Get Involved!

Here at Combe Martin Wildlife Park, we’d like you all to get involved with World Oceans Day so we have got lots of extra activities planned for the day!

Big and Blue! Why not visit the Park dressed all in BLUE?! Or even go that little bit further by dying your hair blue?! You could get sponsored and donate your money to the Marine Conservation Society through us at the Park!

Food frenzy! Pick up some ‘big blue food’ from our Jungle Hut Burger Bar and Oasis Deli Bar for just a small donation. All donations will go to the Marine Conservation Society!

Participate in our fun Ocean Quiz! Answer some quizzical questions about the Ocean and our Oceanic animals and learn some fascinating facts!

Who loves colouring? We all do! So why not pick up some ocean related colourings to do here at the Park or to amuse the children at home!

Face painting – become a sea lion or a penguin or a fish! Proceeds will go to the Marine Conservation Society.

Make sure you watch the super Sea lion shows at 12.15 and 3pm, and our Penguin talk at 4.15pm – there may be a few differences to normal in honour of this special day!

Don’t forget to stop by to spot our newest arrival at the Park – our young California Sea lion! It’s his first birthday on the 7th June – just in time for World Ocean’s Day!
Plus our other two sea lions have birthdays too…. Morgan will have turned 9 on the 5th, and Aero will be 6yrs old on the 11th! Come celebrate with them!
